FHIR-ing up Data Interoperability

Is your organization ready for the FHIR standard? Unsure where to start?

At Vitamin, we’ve been supporting clients in their FHIR adoption journeys: from requirements gathering and data mapping, to implementation and application development.

FHIR is a data standard that uses RESTful APIs to exchange data elements from enterprise health records (EHRs). Once adopted, FHIR can easily augment existing IT infrastructure and tools. Enterprises with FHIR can access and share their data more quickly and cheaply.

Just last month, our team participated in the Virtual HL7 FHIR Connectathon. Across three days, more than 600 senior engineers and healthcare specialists shared instances and implementations of FHIR. Much of the focus centered on quality measurement, and ensuring a consistent understanding of FHIR terminology.

We are particularly enthusiastic about the value of FHIR for our clients when it comes to:

  • Interoperability: FHIR makes it easier than ever to connect systems and exchange data. The standard facilitates semantic harmonization of health data collected from multiple providers, reducing the time spent on data mapping and managing cross-system data heterogeneity.

  • Analytics: FHIR data is more structured and descriptive than any other health information we’ve seen. In addition to values, FHIR users have access to discrete ontologies that describe value sets (like RxNorm and SNOMED) in a consistent way across entities. This allows for the generation of more generalizable insights across EHR provider portfolios.

  • Connectivity: The opportunity to connect one or more custom applications to multiple EHRs is now a possibility with FHIR. Many EHRs now have sandboxes and app stores where third parties may deploy an app and pull individual patient data (with consent). This opens up the potential for deploying a single health application at scale, without the need for customization to each EHR provider.

Major players in the health IT space – including Cerner and Epic Systems, Mayo Clinic and Mount Sinai Health System – are adopting FHIR to meet their needs. By 2022, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services will move all of its quality measure reporting to the standard. FHIR is an increasingly valuable asset to the industry.

Whether you’re interested in FHIR data mapping, implementation, or application development, we’d be keen to connect. Set up a free consultation, and let us help develop your organizational roadmap for FHIR adoption.
